HOME ► 100k Lives Campaign ► Local Hospital Success Stories Local Hospital Success Stories St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center has experienced a number of positive results since their participation in the campaign. Although their quality improvement efforts have always been firmly in place, the campaign introduced a number of successes. They began the campaign with a focus on specific processes that would address adverse patient outcomes. Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center has significantly reduced the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) for their patients by following strict criteria based on national guidelines and corporate goals. By following a few simple but consistent methods such as continuously educating staff on patient rounds, elevating the head of the bed for these patients, providing persistent oral care, and turning their patients every two hours, Saint Mary's has had (only one) VAP since January of 2005. Additionally, they have seen improvements in their surgical infection prevention efforts as well as a significant reduction in their mortality rate. "We continue to strive for zero tolerance in our VAPs and congratulate our exceptional staff for their hard work and dedication, " said Mary Harcinske, RN, Clinical Outcomes Specialist for Saint Mary's.
St Rose Dominican Hospital, DeLima and Siena campuses Both St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, St. Rose DeLima and St. Rose Siena, have been hard at work since they signed up with the campaign and began with a focus on specific processes that would address adverse patient outcomes. The Nevada Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) hospitals have completely eliminated the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) for their patients by following strict criteria based on national guidelines and corporate goals. By following a few simple but consistent methods such as continuously educating staff on patient rounds, elevating the head of the bed for these patients, providing persistent oral care, and turning their patients every two hours, St. Rose DeLima has not had a single VAP since October of 2004, and St. Rose Siena since December of 2004. Their intensive work and tremendous success has led them to become the only Nevada “mentor hospital” for campaign and have recently been recognized by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC) as part of their "Heroes in Infection Control" program. “We continue to strive for zero tolerance in our VAPs and congratulate our exceptional staff for their hard work and dedication, “ said Theresa Lampkins, RN CIC, Infection Control Manager for both St. Rose Dominican hospitals.
