HOME ► National Performance Rankings ► National Rankings for Nursing Homes National Rankings for Nursing Homes We computed nursing home rankings using publicly reported data that appear on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website (www.medicare.gov). On this web-site CMS displays facility-specific, risk adjusted, performance on 19 quality measures for over 15,000 nursing homes nationwide. In these data, CMS suppresses reporting for agencies with small numbers of cases (less than 30). Twelve measures that focus on care for long-stay residents were used in the rankings.1 Results for eleven of these quality measures were averaged over the last four quarterly updates to the Nursing Home Compare to provide more stable and reliable indicators of facility performance. For the measure, "Percent of Long-Stay Residents Given Influenza During the Flu Season" we use the vaccination rate for the most recent flu season. The most recent update of Nursing Home compare occurred in January, 2010. We ranked all facilities on their average performance for each of the twelve measures with reportable scores, with the ranks then standardized to range from 0 to 1 (higher ranks indicating better performance). We computed an average for each facility of these standardized ranks, with all measures weighted equally, as an overall measure of quality performance. For the 13,271 nursing homes with at least 6 measures reported we computed national rankings of overall performance. These rankings are presented as percentiles in the results tables. The data displayed focus on twelve long-stay measures related to a resident’s condition and reflect only a portion of the nursing home resident’s care experience. Patient satisfaction measures are not reported. We advise interpreting this information cautiously and supplementing it with information from the ombudsman's office, the state survey agency, or other sources.
